Windmill School & Air Quality

In an effort to maintain the most up to date air quality assessments, we will be consulting our newly installed Purple Air Monitor to determine daily air quality. You will be able to consult this number as well through the Purple Air app.

Purple Air is an air quality monitoring network built on a new generation of "Internet of Things" sensors to keep an eye on local air quality. We have determined that Purple Air maintains the most monitors near our location and will be the most accurate tool for us.

You may notice Purple Air and AirNow.gov giving different Air Quality Index (AQI) values for your zip code. Please remember that Airnow.gov relies on one monitor in Redwood City, two in San Jose and one in Los Gatos.

We will be using five air quality measurements as a baseline

Green 0-50

If air quality is under 50 there will be no restrictions.

With air quality below 100, Windmill School will be fully operational and provide programming under our normal rules.

Yellow 50-100

If the air quality is between 50- 100; Air quality is considered acceptable; however, if you are exposed for 24 hours there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.

With air quality between 50-100, Windmill School will be fully operational and provide programming under our normal rules.

Orange 100-150

If the air quality is between 100-150; members of sensitive groups (people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens): Reduce your exposure by choosing less strenuous activities or shortening the amount of time you are active outdoors. The general public is not likely to be affected.

Red 150-200

If the air quality is between 150-200; Everyone may begin to experience health effects if they are exposed for 24 hours.

With air quality between 150-200, Windmill School will move all classes inside. Our HVAC, which is equipped with MERV 13 filters as well as our Alen Air Purifiers will remain on in our classrooms

Purple 200+

If the air quality is over 200; Health alert. Everyone may experience more serious health effects if they are exposed for 24 hours.

With air quality 200+, Windmill School will move all classes inside. Our HVAC, which is equipped with MERV 13 filters as well as our Alen Air Purifiers will remain on in our classrooms

Note: We have discovered that unlike regular ozone pollution, Particle pollution episodes, such as wildfire smoke increase respiratory health risks. Particle pollution can be high any time of day and as such, we should limit outdoor activity when there is any smoke in the air.
